Wow! We finally did it! Mostly...

It's time for the announcement a lot of you have been waiting for... EventList 0.9 is out for public testing! Yes, we have been saying “it is coming in EventList 0.9” when you suggested a new idea/feature. We know this has not been the most satisfying answer, but the result is hopefully worth the wait. The new features offered in Joomla 1.5 gave us the opportunity to re-factor the entire component, correct poor design decisions, improve the code quality and much more. Believe us when we say that nearly every line of code has changed!

Before diving into further details we want to thank a few people. First of all thank's to all members of the EventList development team who worked so hard to make that possible, especially to Michael Spredemann and Nicholas Hudson-Ellis who kept an eye on the English translation and the help files and always came up with ideas and improvements during the internal testing phase. Spacial thank's to Peter Brouwers, the Dutch translator and Sami Haaranen, the Finnish translator, who put an tremendous amount of work into the improvement and completeness of the multi-language capabilities of EventList. Also we want to throw out “thank you” to the guys of the German Joomla IRC channel we forced to test EventList more than once. Also all others we forgot to mention who helped in this long energy consuming process.

What's new:

Beside the architectural changes there are too many to mention, so here are the most important ones:

  • Structural changes (eg. MVC)

  • Frontend editing
  • Owner ACL
  • Group system
  • Reoccurring Events
  • RSS Feeds
  • CSS driven Layout
  • Help system
  • Google Maps API
  • Complete change of the Administration Design and Layout. Better work flow.
  • Frontend search and ordering
  • Update check
  • Improved image handling
  • Venues Listing
  • Try it to find out more ;)

Purpose of this Pre-Alpha:

“That's simple”, We need some more testers to get detailed information on how EventList 0.9 behaves on different server configurations. Also your opinion does matter. What do you think about the new EventList? Tell it us in the Feedback forum . File all the noticed bugs into the Bugtracker to help us bring EventList to stable release state.

Did you notice the MOSTLY in the heading?

Yes, it isn't finished and there are still some parts that need additional work. Known parts are:

  • The reoccurring events feature

  • The routing when SEF enabled
  • The Frontend form styling

This means that you shouldn't use EventList 0.9 in a productive environment! No updates will be possible. It is just for testing. And remember, you must have a Joomla 1.5 RC2 to run it.

One of my favorite activities in my free time is reading a good book. Often these books are credited to the partner or the parents of the author. Even EventList isn't completely my work I will use this opportunity to say a Happy 24th Birthday to my younger sister Barbara! Have a long life and good luck with Matze.

Have fun,

The EventList Team
